Maatamarie Pokai-Marks

I gained my NCEA Levels 2 and 3 through the Teen Parent Education Centre and completed a National Certificate in Retail and Travel & Tourism which created a pathway for me to study further.

From there I completed a Flight Attendant Course with Sir George Seymour College, known as NZ School of Tourism. I am currently employed as a Domestic Air Hostess for Air New Zealand.

The Teen Parent Education Unit gave me access to complete my education in a supportive environment with my baby.

After deciding to continue with my education and being a young mum, TPEC supported me in many ways with childcare services that were available and close to the TPEC.

TPEC created a pathway of positivity which handed me a challenge to demonstrate and provide nothing but the best for my child and family.

I am now studying for a three-year Bachelor of Health Science Māori Nursing Degree at Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi.

Kaihau Hiwarau

Currently studying a Bachelor of Social Science working towards completing a conjoint degree majoring in Political Science and Social Policy.

During my time at TPEC I was able to gain a solid foundation that opened pathways to doors I never thought was possible.

I was recently selected to participate in “Whaka NZ” a hui funded by the NZ Treasury and McGuinness Foundation which culminated in a presentation to the Governor General.

In attending TPEC I was able to explore a variety of pathway options until I found something that suited my interests. I began my journey wishing to study Tourism. TPEC supported me in engaging with the local Council as a Youth Leader. It was there that I found a desire to work with youth. I completed some Level 4 Youth Work papers to support this.

After being given the opportunity of a Work Placement in a local electrical firm, I found this to be my true calling. Since leaving TPEC I completed an Elite Electrical program through ETCO, and have now secured an apprenticeship to become a qualified electrician with Jones & Cole Electrical.

I enjoyed it and I am grateful that TPEC provided me with so many options to explore until I found my passion. Also while at TPEC I gained my full Driver’s License, Forklift License, Certificate in Barista, First Aid Certificate, and many other things.

In attending TPEC I was able to gain NCEA Levels 2 & 3. I also gained Certificates in Travel and Tourism, Barista, Business and Retail. TPEC has supported me through many challenges in my life. It was their support that kept me focused on achieving my goals to better myself and create a better future for my daughter. I worked towards a career pathway in Law and have since been successful with employment as a full-time Legal Assistant.

TPEC remains a close support in my life and I appreciate all that the Centre offers.

Studying with TPEC was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I didn’t miss out on any of my daughter’s milestones, as babies were welcome to join us.

TPEC has supported me through my journey of personal growth and it changed the path my life was heading towards. Kylie and the staff provided me with endless opportunities resulting in me completing NCEA Levels 2 & 3. I gained a scholarship with Toi Ohomai and I am currently studying light automotive engineering in order to become a mechanic. I am forever grateful to have attended such a beautiful place.
